Dont understand what your 240 volt house mains has to do with a battery powered tube amp but here: Forget the tubes with batteries, the ham radio guys have been trying to do it for years. “To much wasted power with battery operation” To try you will need a deep cycle marine battery, then build a DC to DC up converter, then get 1 hour max You can buy a an old DC power supply for a Heathkit tranceiver cheap for about $60. 750V DC at 250 ma, 300v DC at 100 ma, -40 to -130 v DC adjustable bias Draw is 12 volts at around 25 amps One here http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1235790951 I

Well, it’s just my humble opinion, but if you don’t understand enough about electronics to adapt a 120 VAC design to 240 VAC (simply a matter of selecting the appropriate power transformer) then you have no business building a tube amp. That said, Steve Bench has a few designs for battery powered tube amps and power supplies at his site Solar Panel Inverter setup Look for the section titled “Battery Powered Tube Amplifiers” It’s not exactly step-by-step, so you’ll have to learn some things and understand what’s going on. Sometimes in life that’s the price you have to pay. BTW, please stop YELLING! It’s hard to read and it makes my ears hurt. Also, it doesn’t make a very good first impression. Solar panels work ok just a little pricey and the storage batteries are heavy. I have a EL84 stereo amp in my VW Bus running off solar along with refrigerators, lights and other stuff. Power to Go makes a 400 watt true sine wave inverter for $99 which is key, as sound quality with a modified sine wave inverter probably wouldn’t be worth the bother.

That’s what the battery is for. Actually most people would just skip the solar panel and use the battery with a charger. Here is what I just posted on rec.audio.pro to someone’s question about portable sound for a whole band if you are interested in the subject. I see some people using a battery with an AC inverter so they can use whatever amp they want rather than being forced to use a battery amp. I just bought a 400 watt true sine wave inverter for $99 by a company called Power to Go. Almost all the inverters in this price range that I see are modified sine wave and it seems that isn’t good for audio equipment or your sound quality. Car batteries will work but if you can bring yourself to spend $129-$169 you can get a gel battery from anyplace that sells solar equipment that has a lot more power, will last much longer (ten years or more) and is safer to carry around because the acid is in a gel rather than liquid so it doesn’t gas or leak. I would get a couple of gel batteries, inverters and a charger, for about $800 you will have plenty of power and unless the band only owns huge amps they should be able to use equipment that they already have.

Hi Daz, First of all , shame on you for bringing us Aussies in disrepute. That’s my job here in AGA. Why? The use of caps in a message is generally known as shouting. Don’t do it if it isn’t neccessary. Normal punctuation will get you a better result.(It won’t piss people off) I have re read your post, and have deduced that the reason you are looking for a battery powered schematic is that you think it will be easier than using a schem for a european or USA AC voltage. Not so. Use a 240 AC transformer that will deliver the correct voltages for the circuit design. There are many mains transformers with selectable primary windings, allowing you to use the TR on 240, 120. 220, etc. I am completely certain that if you go to the AX84 Project web site, and asked a few q’s regarding what 240 TR’s to use with their circuits, you would get info. As far as the european 220 V , there is generally no problem using these in Aus on 240V. Sometimes it will just be a matter of biasing the tubes , compensating for the higher line voltage. The amp will be running at a slightly higher voltage all round, but there isn’t much harm in this if all the components are good (Filter caps etc). I had a VOX AC 30 66 model that was domestic UK model, had 220V plate on it. It worked very well on 240V here in Aus for at least 3 years that I used it. The reason is that the UK 220V can vary as much as plus or minus 10 percent. The line can be as high as 242, and as low as 200V and it would be within the operating spec of the amp. Doesn’t mean it will be operating in ideal circumstances till the amp is biased to compensate though. Go to the AX84 site, it has all that you need.Solar Panel Inverter setup
