There is a standard Sony Hi8 battery “shell” that can be loaded with nicad AAs. A small solar power panel (unfortunately a long since discontinued backpacking product but there are probably current alternatives) can be clipped to the cap or pack with a wire leading to a fairly light 4-cell recharger box. It keeps you going with a reasonable amount of taping per day. It’s the telephoto adapter and small tripod that weigh you down. One of the joys of bushwhacking is parking for a few hours with your camcorder 50 yards or so downwind from a water source. Either a spring or where a game trail approaches a stream. Unfortunately all the interest is usually early or late, in light too low to get any kind of decent video at the small apertures of the telephotos, but it’s fun nonetheless.

Also, I am getting into video more nowadays and just want to experiment with the medium in general. Actually, it sounds like a great idea. After all, most folks take a camera. I can see taking the video as an interesting alternative, It might be a way to put a new twist on an otherwise regular trip solar pv panel efficiency. I think it does also, you just put the little disc into a adapter cartridge. Sofar as photography is concerned there’s not much movement in the backcountry, i.e. boring videos.  I suppose you could video as you walk down the trail. It would be nice to capture those wildlife moments.  Like when you see that rare specie and you wonder what the heck was that?  A video camera might be better here because some of them have a pretty outrageous zoom lens.  But a conventional consumer video camera would not do this moment justice.  And I damn sure wouldn’t want to carry a professional video camera. So what is this, a backpacking trip or a video trip?
